Drivers in China vs USA
I had a bit of a revelation while walking down the street today. I saw a taxi driver pull out of a alley into a crowded street. He nearly hit a woman on a bicycle and then nearly hit an oncoming car in the wrong lane. However, the woman kept on her way and the oncoming car driver kept on going. The passenger in the front seat of the taxi kept chatting away on his cell phone. In the states, I think everyone would be giving each other dirty looks, even yelling at each other
My guess is that in the states people expect everyone to be good drivers, but I guess people in China expect everyone to be bad drivers. Based on my own experience, seeing drivers rarely use turn signals, drive in and out of lanes, cut other people off, drive into a crowded streets without even blinking, honking horns constantly to alert bicyclists and pedestrians to get out of the way, and rarely giving pedestrians the right of way, I would simply be afraid to drive here. However, I have almost never seen people get rude or nasty to each other.
So despite the what I see as chaos on the streets here, people are pretty easy going and rarely do I see people get rude to each other, unless there is an actual accident, then its seems to never be anybody's fault, despite all the facts to the contrary.
