Colorado Scenic Trip
Last week I went to visit my father and his wife in Denver, Colorado. I have really enjoyed the weather in Colorado. The elevation in Colorado is much higher than Arizona. The days are warm and nights are cool during the summer, yet very comfortable.
After seeing the city of Denver on the first day, Dad and I began on a 4 day 3 night camping trip around the state of Colorado. First we drove to the Great Sand Dunes National Park in the south part of the state. This national park for its unusual geographic feature. There are very tall lush and green mountains in a circular line and in the middle is a giant sand dune. Dad and I climbed to the top of the dune in our bare feet. When we left the park we helped a family get to a hotel because they lost their car keys while playing in the sand!
The whole day there was intermittent rain and at night we set up our tent in the driving rain along the Rio Grande river. Late at night after the rain stopped, I got out of the tent and saw a clear sky filled with a thousand stars. The stars seemed so close and bright I was shocked. I could even seen the
When we woke up in the morning we found ourselves in a beautiful valley. Dad cooked up some breakfast with eggs. Later we cleaned up our campsite and got back on the road. We drove north towards higher elevations. Passing beautiful lakes and small country towns.
We next visited the the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This canyon is very impressive. It is very deep and narrow. The Gunnison river flows very quickly through it. Within 48 miles the river flows farther down than the Mississippi River does from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. That means the Gunnison river is flowing downhill about 95 feet per mile. So it cuts through the earth very quickly.
We were lucky to go to the north side of the canyon as the views are better. We hiked to many different spots to be able to take lots of pictures. To see more photos from Colorado, visit my Gallery. I will write more about my trip next time!
