Getting in shape - break a sweat
I am in the best shape in years. Ever since I started running to the beach regularly, my mornings and my life have changed a lot. When I first came to Hawaii, I mainly did exercise in my room. Its funny looking back at that now, how difficult and hot that was. I was blasting the A/C to stay cool in the room while I was trying to do crunches and push-ups. The effect was mildly productive at best.
One day last December, a co-worker from Japan who was visiting Hawaii and liked running, asked me if I would like to run with her. I thought, I'll give it a try, its been a while since I went jogging. Though I only ran with her that one morning, I felt good and decided to keep running in the mornings. Its amazing how that one day was pivotal in changing my body and life.
After a week, I was shocked by how much the running had helped me slim down. I was already fitting into my clothes better. I decided to make it a daily routine. At the beach park there are some pull-up bars. I decided to throw pull-ups into my routine. The first day I could did two sets of ten pull ups. Even that was a strain. Yet as I felt myself getting stronger, I added more sets of pull-ups and even push-ups on a park table.
I think running is better than walking for your health, because you break a sweat, you are making your heart pump harder and faster. I think, if you can't run, you should walk. Walking is better than nothing. However, I think if you can run and break a sweat, that is best for your health.
Since December I have kept to my routine, taking at most one or two days off each week to let my muscles recover. I now am up to 80 pull-ups a day (8 sets of ten) and 100 push-ups (4 sets of 25) and I run all along the beach in a big circle. I love to run by the beach in the mornings, the air is clean, cool and fresh, there are less people, and sometimes like today, I will jump into the water after I exercise for a terrific feeling.
My next plan is to make a exercise video, showing what I did to get into shape.
I did forget to mention that I have also made a commitment to eating right as well. I have intentionally stayed away from my favorite foods, pizza, because I always feel completely stuffed after eating one, and it takes extra exercise to work it off. This combination of eating right and doing exercise is hard work but it pays dividends eventually.
