China earthquake

Earthquake in China. Typically when I see news of a disaster in a far away place, I think that is horrible, but I try not to let it linger in my mind. However, this time I know some people who are from Sichuan Province, where the terrible 7.8 massive earthquake took place that has killed an estimated 9000 people including 900 kids in a school building. At most, I can just send e-mails that wish them well and ask how their loved ones are doing. I suppose that is enough for now.
My biggest concern would be the structural integrity of buildings and dams in that area. I was never really impressed with the quality of construction there. What scares me is corruption and short cuts in construction projects that undercut the quality of construction materials and methods in buildings. Not that the same things don't happen in the US, look at the Big Dig project in Boston, or the bridge colapse in Minnesota. But since China is still developing, I think fundamental trust and safety issues are probably still a major concern.
On an ironic side note, I created a new website called the FunnyPages where I plan to add funny pictures, videosm and jokes that I get by e-mail.
