Chinese tattoos
First let me say, this is not a picture of me! I took this picture because I have noticed that it is very popular for people to get tattoos with Chinese characters. I like Chinese characters, but I don't have any tattoos nor do I plan to get any.
The real sad thing is that I have seen so many tattoos with Chinese characters that are meaningless or quite strange or meaning something completely different than what was intended. These tattoos have been so bad or wrong that I have several times considered making a website dedicated to Chinese character tattoos.
For example, I met a guy who had a Chinese character tattooed to each arm. On one arm was the character for "outdoors, or field" and on the other arm was the character for "product". I put them together, and based on the guy's extravagant fashion I asked him if his tattoos meant "wild thing", and he said yes! I said, oh wow, how cool. But in my mind, I was laughing because it meant "field product" but I could guess what he meant. I wonder what any Chinese or Japanese person might think if they saw that.
In the picture to the right, the tattoo on the back of the guy's arm has two characters which means "health", and the third one on the bottom means "peace". However, as they are, it doesn't make much sense. It would be like writing health-peace on the back of my arm. So what?
