Q: When I see a foreigner, what should I say?

Mark's Answer: I think its good to start just by saying "Hi" with a smile. If you notice something very interesting (something positive!) about someone, it's good to mention it. For example, "That’s a really cool hat!" "Where did you get it?" and start from there.

I think you should pay attention to what they say and try to learn more about them. But be careful not to get too personal with your questions right away. Western people like to protect their privacy. So don't ask questions right away like, "How old are you?" "Are you married?"

Rather, you should ask questions so that maybe you can find a common bond. What do they study? What are they interested in? What do they do? Try to share a little interesting information about yourself or your home country that you think they might like. Remember, think of your potential new friend as another human being, so try not to pressure them. Would you want your friends to do that to you? Friendships are made over time, so take it easy.
